The Complete Hotel Housekeeping Checklist (Free Template Included)

Housekeeping is the single biggest driver of both your review scores and your labor cost. When standards slip, guests notice within seconds of opening the door — and when they're enforced inconsistently, your best housekeepers burn out covering for everyone else. A written checklist is the fix, and this page gives you the complete structure.

Why a checklist matters more than experience

Every experienced housekeeper has a personal routine. That's a strength — until two housekeepers on the same floor produce visibly different rooms. A written checklist doesn't replace skill; it sets the minimum standard every room must meet, so quality stops depending on who's on duty. And the checklist only verifies the room — the written procedure behind it is what makes two housekeepers produce the same one. If your SOPs are still unwritten, start with how to write hotel SOPs your team will actually follow. Properties that standardize see fewer inspection failures, faster training for new hires, and fewer "room wasn't clean" complaints.

The departure clean: room by room

Entry and living area

  • Door: wipe handles and frames both sides; check do-not-disturb sign removed
  • Wardrobe: polish hangers, wipe shelving, check safe is open and empty, laundry bag in place
  • Furniture: dust all surfaces top-down, wipe remote controls, straighten furniture to the floor plan
  • Windows and mirrors: streak-free glass, sills dusted
  • Floor: vacuum carpet edge-to-edge (under the bed weekly), mop hard floors

Bathroom

  • Shower/tub: scrub walls, floor, and drain; polish fixtures; replace liner if soiled
  • Toilet: bowl inside and out, seat both sides, base and behind
  • Vanity: polish counter, sink, and fixtures; restock towels and amenities to brand par
  • Mirror and light fixtures: streak-free
  • Floor: mop last, working toward the door

Bedroom

  • Strip bed completely; check mattress protector and mattress for soil or damage
  • Make bed to property standard (flat sheet, tucks, pillow positioning, finished fold)
  • Fluff and rotate pillows; replace any stained ones immediately
  • Nightstands: dust, sanitize phone and remote, restock collateral
  • Final scent-and-sight check from the doorway before marking the room clean

Stayover service: the shorter standard

A stayover is not a half-done departure clean — it has its own sequence: reset the bed area, refresh towels and amenities, remove trash, wipe guest-touch surfaces, and spot-vacuum. The classic mistake is letting stayovers drift; by day three of a long stay the room reads as neglected. Your checklist should include a day-3 refresh: full bathroom wipe-down and floor care.

The supervisor's inspection checklist

Inspection only works when it's scored. Use a 40-point checklist with a simple rubric: 2 points (perfect), 1 point (minor rework), 0 points (guest would notice). A room below 72 points goes back for rework, and scores are tracked per housekeeper per week. What gets measured stays fixed.

Time standards: what's realistic

Industry planning numbers: roughly 25–30 minutes for a departure clean and 15–20 minutes for a stayover at select-service properties, more at full-service with turndown. If your board plan assumes 15-minute departure cleans, the checklist doesn't matter — the schedule is lying to your team, and quality pays for it.
